Government Brings Back Quota System For 2022/2023 Colleges Of Education Admission

Government of Ghana Brings Back Quota System For 2022/2023 Colleges Of Education Admission

A list released by Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) submitted that the Government of Ghana has reintroduced quota system for admission of students into the various colleges of education despite degree status.

According to a letter seen by sixscribes.com, to the National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), a total of specified number of level 100 teacher trainees are expected to be admitted into the 46 public Colleges of Education for the 2022/2023 academic year.

In view of this, every college has been given a quota which should be strictly adhered to by the Principal.

We bring for your attention and action permissible admission figures for entry into level 100 at the Colleges of Education in the 2022/2023 academic year.

Please be informed that the allocation cannot be varied and must strictly be adhered to. For avoidance of doubt, payment of Feeding Grants and Trainee Allowances will be guided by these numbers.” — part of the letter said.

Content of letter and admission quota below:

The content of the letter stands contrary to what the then Minister of State in Charge of Tetiary Education, Professor Kwasi Yankah, said in 2017. He stated Colleges of Education were eligible to admit as many qualified applicants since facilities were available to accommodate students.

He further insisted quota system for admission could prevent qualified applicants from being admitted into teacher training colleges, therefore, the Ministry of Education under the Akufo-Addo government will not subscribe to admitting limited applicants.
